May Xbox 360 Update Brings New Codecs

Sure, everybody's probably going to be talking about the keyboard that you jam into the back of the controller, and instant messenger, but to me the coolest bits of the update are just line items in the middle of a big list:

  • H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
  • Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.

This is excellent news. They don't talk about resolutions, but at 15Mbps, I'm guessing we've got full blown 1080p support coming. My only question is: when do we get AAC 5.1?

Who will be first to offer me AAC 5.1 on my receiver? Apple TV or Xbox 360?
